John Leone

John P. Leone, age 81, died Sunday June 29, 2008 at the Marcella Center in Burlington Township. John was born October 10, 1926 in Burlington and remained a lifelong resident. He was the son of the late Antonio and Carmela (nee Vitale) Leone. He was preceded into the hands of the Lord by his loving wife Hester (nee Jobes) Leone. He was also predeceased by his brothers Anthony, Peter, James and Samuel, his sisters Ora Lukens, Mary Darch, Josephine Theilman and Anna Losito. He was employed at Hercules Powder Co., in Burlington Township until his retirement in 1989. John was an army veteran of World War II, who served in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the Elks, Roma Club, Victor Emmanuel Club and the Mitchell Fire Co. IV, all in Burlington City. John was an avid baseball player and bowler. He was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s R.C. Church in Burlington and served as an usher for the 7:30 Mass for many years. He is survived by his sister in law Lillie Leone, his brother in law William Jobes, two cousins James and Joseph Vesaki. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. Viewings will be held Wednesday July 2nd from 6-8pm and Thursday, July 3rd from 8:30-9:30am at the Page Funeral Home, 302 E. Union St., Burlington. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10am Thursday July 3, 2008 in St. Paul’s R.C. Church, E. Union St., Burlington. Burial will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Burlington. Joseph Arnao (Former BCFD Chief)

Joseph Arnao, age 92, died Monday June 23, 2008 at the Marcella Center in Burlington Township. Mr. Arnao was born in Rockwood, PA to the late Orazio and Mary (nee Pagano) Arnao. Joe and his family moved to Burlington following the death of his mother and has remained a lifelong resident. In his youth, Joe was a talented musician and played the saxophone, clarinet, mandolin and banjo. He was asked to help start a band for the Niagara Hose Co. No. 6 in Burlington City. Through this involvement he became a member of the fire company in 1937 and has been a dedicated volunteer ever since. Joe has risen through the ranks of the fire company serving in the offices of Assistant Foreman, Foreman, Assistant Chief and Chief of the City of Burlington Fire Dept. in 1967. Joe was also a member of the Burlington County Fire Police and a past Captain of the Burlington City Fire Police, a position he held for over ten years. He was a Chairman on many committees within the Niagara Hose Co., the City of Burlington Fire Department and many of the Burlington County Organizations to which he belonged. Joe was a member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs, and a past president and life member of the following organizations; NJ State Fire Police Association, Burlington County Fire Chief’s Assoc., Burlington County Fire Police Assoc., Burlington County Firemen’s Assoc., Burlington County Exempt Assoc. and the Burlington City Exempt Assoc. He was the vice president of the Burlington City Relief Assoc., and the Burlington County Fire Training Council. He served as a Burlington County Fire Coordinator for over twenty years, and as a committee member of the Burlington County Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service. He also dedicated time and energy to the Burlington County Fire Training Grounds and as a fire police instructor for over twenty seven years, positions which enabled him to train and pass along the wealth of knowledge and experience of over seventy years in the fire service to younger firefighters. For his tireless and dedicated service to his community, Joe has been awarded the Distinguished Service Award and Ben Franklin Silver Medal, as well as several proclamations from the City of Burlington, Burlington County and the State of NJ. Predeceased by his brothers Pasquale, John, Anthony and Frank, Mr. Arnao was also predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Emily (Betty) Arnao. He is survived by his daughters and son in law: Emily West of Medford, Jo Marie and Carlton Shinn of Springfield Twp., and Dottie Arnao of Roebling, his grandchildren Vincent (Carol) DiTullio and Paul DiTullio of California, Lorraine (Stephen) Fazekas and Heather (Kevin) Shoppas of Burlington Twp., Rachel (Stephen) Wilkins of Mullica Hill, Chad Jacobsen and Amy Jacobsen of Roebling and seven great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers Luciano and Charles Arnao, his sister Florence Fritter and step brother Samuel Ochipinti. Viewings for Mr. Arnao will be held Friday June 27th from 4-6pm and from 7-9pm and on Saturday June 28th from 9-10:30am at the Niagara Hose Co. No. 6, 656 High St., Burlington. A funeral service will be held Saturday at 10:30am at the Niagara Hose. Co. Interment will be private and held at the convenience of the family. Elaine McGrath, beloved mother of Marguerite (Stanley) Hansell, Kathleen (Vito) Pennisi and Carol (Michael) Kovacs passed into God’s loving and eternal care on June 22, at home surrounded by her family. She would have been 87 on June 30th.
Born in New York City, she lived in Burlington for most of her adult life. She was predeceased by her husband Joseph McGrath and her great granddaughter Gia Hansell.
Elaine’s extended family includes her brother John Faubion (Maureen); 10 grandchildren: Michael (Mary) Hansell, Christopher Hansell, Stephan Hansell, Andrea (John) Herbert, Matthew (Tracy) Pennisi, Maria (Brian) Pennisi-Donnelly, Monica (Marc) Marsico, Melanie (Richard) Kleindienst, Michelle (Eric) Schultz, Catherine (Chancellor) VanSciver; 16 great grandchildren: (Kerri Hansell, Michael Hansell, Joseph Hansell, Steven Hansell, John Herbert, III, Jenna Herbert, Jake Herbert, Nicholas Lyle-Olsen, Luke Pennisi, Siena Marsico, Savanna Marsico, Jaime Kleindenst, Cole Kleindienst, Maxwell Schultz, Henry Schultz, & Rose VanSciver; and one great, great grandchild Alana Craig.
Despite having left school for marriage at an early age, she earned her GED and an Associate’s Degree from Burlington County College. She later became a substitute teacher for several school districts and a teacher’s aide for Mount Holly township school district. She worked as a special officer with the Edgewater Police department and as a dispatcher with the Burlington Township Police department. She was president of the Women’s Auxiliary of the New Jersey Fraternal Order of Police in the late fifties. She did volunteer work as the committee chairperson for the Juvenile Conference Committee in Burlington Township for more than 20 years. She was a lifetime member of the Eastern Star of the Burlington Chapter #276 of the Masonic Lodge. She owned and operated “The Coterie”, a small soup & sandwich shop in Burlington City which was famous for its homemade soups.
Elaine enjoyed a full and rich life. She traveled extensively with her family, and until recently, had vacationed in Las Vegas every year since the mid sixties. Elaine was a caring person who loved animals and volunteered for the Animal Welfare in Burlington County before the formal county operations came into being. She rescued many dogs and cats from abusive and abandoned homes. Elaine loved life, people and laughter. .
Family & friends are invited to Page Funeral Home at 302 East Union Street in Burlington City on Thursday from 7-9 p.m. Mass will be held at Saint Paul Roman Catholic Church, also on Union Street, on Friday at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Lakeview Memorial Park in Cinnaminson New Jersey.

Richard S. "Dick" Thomas

Richard S. “Dick” Thomas, of Burlington Township, died Sunday, June 22, 2008 at Samaritan Hospice Inpatient Facility, in Mt. Holly, at the age of 92. Mr. Thomas was born in Burlington and remained a lifelong resident. He was a lifelong member of All Saints Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society, the Thaddeus Kosiuszko Club, the All Saints Senior Citizens Club and the Burlington Township VFW, all in Burlington. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War Two where he served in the Pacific Theater of Operations during the battles for New Guinea and the South Philippines. He received several awards for his service including the American Theater Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Ribbon, the Victory Medal, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal and the Bronze Arrowhead. After the war, he worked for 35 years at the John A. Roebling Steel Company as a roll grinder and a wire drawer.
Husband of the late Angela (nee Siminski), he is survived by his children, Richard C. (Francine), of Elkridge, MD, Donald (Karyn), of Lawrenceville, GA, Christina (Scott) Petty, of Pittsboro, NC, and Kenneth (Kathleen), of Mantua, his grandchildren, Rebecca, Jesse, Jaime, Alex, Emily, Madison and Kenny, his great grandchildren, Cecily, Robert, Garrett and Olivia, and his brother, Edwin, of Medford Lakes and sister, Irene McCall, of Harrisburg, PA.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Saturday in All Saints Church, High St., Burlington, with burial following in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Mary Jacoby (nee: Vesaki) of Burlington passed away in Marcella Nursing Center in Burlington Township Thursday at the age of 97. Mary was a lifelong Burlington resident who was a parishioner of All Saints R.C. Church. Wife of the late Charles, she is survived by her daughters Joyce and Elwood Holmes, Carole Marchese, and Linda Pastorius. Grandchildren Michael & Kevin Holmes, Lisa Orem, Thomas Marchese, Daniel Pastorius, Dana Kinkead, her great grandchildren Kelsey & Liam Orem, Zachary, Ava, Jacob, and Sarah Jane Holmes. She is also survived by her brother Teddy & Vivian Vesaki, a sister in law Millie Jacoby and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Anne, Edith and Louise and a brother Louie.

Alexander Bothwell, Sr.

Alexander Bothwell, Sr. of Columbus, NJ passed away on June 6, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. The eldest child of William Nassau and Annemarie Bothwell, Alexander was born May 2, 1934 in Port Reading, NJ. He graduated from Woodbridge High School in 1951, and immediately entered the military. As a result of his active service in the US Army’s 101st Airborne Division from 1954 to 1956 he became a veteran. After leaving the military Alexander attended Rider College in Trenton, where he met his wife of 49 years, Albina Beatrice Gennello. He worked as a tool and dye marker at DeLaval Turbine Company in Trenton for 37 years until his retirement in 1996. Along with his family, Alexander co-founded several businesses including Gennello’s Fruit Produce and Deli in Hamilton, Bookkeeping Assistance, dvPayroll and HR, and Primepoint, LLC in Bordentown, NJ. After his retirement from DeLaval he continued to work at dvPayroll and Primepoint until his death.
Alexander was an avid fisherman, enjoyed traveling with his family, and attending sporting events of his children and grandchildren.
A loving husband and father, he is survived by his wife Albina Beatrice. Three sons and their wives Alexander & Valerie, William Nassau & Hildegarde, David & Mary. Eight grandchildren, two brothers William Nassau and Henry a sister Anne Marie Truelove and extended family. The family invites friends to his viewings and funeral service. Joseph Kozuck, of Beaufort, SC, formerly of Burlington passed away Veterans Victory House, Waterboro, South Carolina on Friday at the age of 88. Joseph was a proud veteran of the US Army having served during WWII. He served with the 91st Constabulary Squadron as a section leader whose principle duty was policing the Russian-American border.
He was a machinist who retired from Arthur J. Evers Corp in Delran. Joseph and his late wife Ann where “part-time” Brigatine residents who also were members of the Good Cheer Club of Burlington County. Husband of the late Ann (nee:Garofola) he is survived by his son and daughter in law Donald J and Saundra K. Kozuck of South Carolina and his sister Katheryn VanArtsdale of Delran. Frank J. Caulfield of Barnegat, formerly of Burlington Township, passed away in Southern Ocean Co. Hospital Friday at the age of 80. Frank was born in Philadelphia and was a proud US Navy Veteran Seabee who served honorably from 1945-1955. He worked as an Engineer in the corporate office of Morton-Thiokol Corporation in Newton, PA from 1961 until his retirement in 1989. Frank was a former Burlington Township Councilman and Council President from 1966-1972. In 1974 he became the Mayor of Burlington Township and served on every board and commission in the Township of Burlington. Frank was preceded in death by 8 brothers and sisters. He is survived by his wife of 52 years Marilyn R. (nee:Denning) sons Mark F. and Eric J. Caulfield both of Melbourne, Fl, Daryl B. Caulfield of Westampton, his grandchildren Mark R. Caulfield of Melbourne, Fl, Adam J and Laura L. Caulfield both of Westampton and a sister Catherine A. Perry of Moorestown. Mary E. Singer (nee:Murphy) of Burlington passed away on Thursday at the age of 94. Mary was a devoted member of the Presbyterian Church of Burlington. She worked at the Beaunit Mills factory, Samuel Smith School cafeteria, where everyone enjoyed her cookies, and was also a hospital volunteer for many years. She loved her family, bingo, gardening and the Price is Right game show.
Wife of the late Hilton C. Singer, and sister of the late Alice Jordan, she is survived by her daughter and son in law Dolores (Lou) Arnao of Burlington, grandchildren Keith Arnao of Hainesport, Karen (Bradford) Anderson of Riverside and her great grandchildren Bradford and Rosemary Anderson of Riverside.

Margaret J. Ward (nee Simpkins), of Burlington Township, died Tuesday, May 20, 2008 at Samaritan Hospice Inpatient Center, Mt. Holly, at the age of 82. Mrs. Ward was born in Beverly and remained a lifelong area resident. She was a devoted homemaker, wife, mother and grandmother.
Mother of the late Mary Dauria and the late John G. Ward, she is survived by her husband, George S. Ward, Sr., her daughter, Kathy Reid, and her son and daughter in law, George S., Jr. and Denise Ward, all of Burlington, her grandchildren, Jessica Ward, Donna Marie Ward, Christine Hans, Jaime Schweyer and Robert J. Peterolff, and her great grandchildren, Mary Peterolff, Grace Hans and Ryan Hans, as well as her nephews and niece, Bruce Walton, John Ward and Denise Ward.

Marilyn J. Rand, age 79 of Westampton, NJ died peacefully on May 19, 2008. She was born in Salem, MA and resided in Westampton for the past 44 years. During those years, she was very involved in the Westampton community. She served 18 years on the township committee and during this time she was on the planning and zoning boards. Thirteen of those years were spent as mayor for the township. She had made Westampton a thriving community for businesses and people to live. Another accomplishment of hers was being a founder and life time member of the Westampton Fire and Emergency Department in which she helped build and volunteered on the emergency squad. Also during her years living in the township, she was involved with the school board, PTA, American Legion and Girl Scouts. She was employed by WT Grants in the Bradford House for many years. Wife of the late Thomas W. Rand. She is survived by three sons; Gary Rand of Eastampton, NJ, Greg Rand of Philadelphia, PA, Glen Rand of Tampa, FL, three daughters; Patricia Raun of Oregon City, OR, Carol Holland of Palmyra, NJ and Cindy Cuerrier of Westampton, NJ. She is also survived by a sister, two brothers, five grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Jean L. Page (nee Luckenbill), of Burlington City, died Monday, May 19, 2008 at Samaritan Inpatient Hospice, Mt. Holly, at the age of 87. Mrs. Page was born in Reading, Pa. and as a girl, she lived in various towns in New Jersey where her father was a Methodist clergyman, including, Glassboro, Atlantic City, Trenton, and Mullica Hill where she was married. She was a graduate of Glassboro High School, Class of ’38. Jean loved to sing, and as a young woman she performed with theater groups and community groups both as an amateur and as a professional, and she also sang at many weddings. After her marriage, she moved to Burlington with her husband, Wayne, where he opened the Page Funeral Home. Jean was an integral part of the day to day operations of the funeral home, acting as receptionist, door greeter, and book keeper until retiring in 1986. She was also active in the Burlington community. She was a member of the Broad Street United Methodist Church and a church choir member for over fifty years. She was also a charter member and founder of the Burlington Women’s Club and a member of the Board of Directors of the Friendly Institution, which is a venerable charitable organization in Burlington. She was well known for her domestic skills, especially her cooking and baking and her sewing of clothing and costumes, and curtains and draperies. She was also an avid reader. She loved her beach home on Long Beach Island, dubbed “the Yellow Pages” because of its color, where she loved hosting her family and friends. She was occasionally known to close the evening at the Surf City Hotel by singing “God Bless America”. She and her late husband were also patrons and supporters of the Surf Light Theater, in Beach Haven.
Wife of the late Wayne H. Page, she is survived by her son and daughter in law, John W. and Dee Page, of Burlington, her daughter and son in law, Linda Page McCardell and Mike McCardell, of Vincentown, her grandchildren, Charles and Marjorie McCardell, also of Vincentown, her nephew, William Barry Luckenbill, of Doylestown, PA, and several other nieces and nephews, as well as her companion, “Roxy”, the dachshund, and her devoted caregiver, Millicent Antwi.
Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Saturday in the Broad Street United Methodist, 36 East Broad St., Burlington, with burial following in St. Mary’s Churchyard, W. Broad St., Burlington. Friends may also call at the Page Funeral Home, 302 E. Union St., Burlington, on Friday from 6 to 9 PM, and at the Broad Street Methodist Church, on Saturday from 10 to 11 AM.

Maureen Eggenberger

Maureen Ann Eggenberger, age 56, of Burlington, NJ., died May 19, 2008 at Samaritan Inpatient Hospice in Mt. Holly.
Maureen was born in Hackensack, NJ to Alfred and Ethel Marie (nee Nenstiel) Eggenberger on March 17, 1952. She resided in the Burlington County area for the past 17 years. She will be missed by her close friends Ellen, Grace, Mary Lou, Susan, Wendy, Priscilla, Kathryn, Debra and Cindy as well as many other friends and caregivers.
Maureen attended the Occupational Training Center Adult Day Services program from 1991 until 2007 when she began attending The Arc of Burlington County Seniors Program.
Maureen loved dancing, singing, soap operas, Barbies and dolls. She was a great fan of Michael Jackson. She will be remembered for her wonderful spirit and for the laughter she brought to others.
Friends are invited to attend her funeral service on Tuesday, May 27th, at 11:00 a.m. at the Page Funeral Home, 302 E. Union St., Burlington where a viewing will be held from 10:00 until 11:00. Burial will follow in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Burlington.

Maj. Thomas E. Crawford, Sr., US Army Ret.

Maj. Thomas E. Crawford, Sr., US Army, Ret., died peacefully at the home of his daughter in Burlington Twp., at the age of 91. Mr. Crawford was born in Burlington City and remained a lifelong resident. He was a graduate of Wilbur Watts High School, Class of 1935. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in 1977, graduating Cum Laude from Rutgers University. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a combat medic in the “Dixie Division” in the Pacific Theater. He was a bronze star recipient and received a presidential unit citation. He continued his service in the Army Reserves retiring after 20 years of service at the rank of Major. He was employed as a postal clerk in the Burlington Post Office until his retirement. He was a longstanding member of St. Paul’s R.C. Church in Burlington, where he was a member of the Holy Name Society and served as a Eucharistic Minister. He was a past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Burlington Council 589, also a member of the 4th degree Knights of Columbus, John Tatham Assembly. He was a member of the Scully-Bozarth Post 1817 VFW, American Legion, Post 79, both in Burlington, the Reserve Officers Association, the American Postal Workers Union, a member and past president of the Good Cheer Club and a member of the Burlington Elks. He also served on the Burlington County Transportation Senior Citizens Advisory Committee and the NJ Transit Senior Citizens Advisory Committee. He was an avid sportsman who especially loved fishing. He also loved to travel and visited locales on five different continents. Husband of the late Rowena G.( nee Griggs), Mr. Crawford is survived by his daughters and sons in law: Elizabeth and Edward Colona of Burlington, Mary and David Kerstetter of Burlington Twp. his sons and daughters in law: James F. and Debbie Crawford, of Burlington and Thomas E., Jr. and Bernadette Crawford of Bordentown, his grandchildren: Michael Colona, Dr. Katherine Colona-Morasch and her husband Michael, Sarah Colona, John Colona, Thomas E. Crawford, Daniel Kerstetter, Matthew Kerstetter, Amanda Kerstetter, Elizabeth Anne Crawford and Stephen Crawford, his great granddaughter Anna Elizabeth Morasch as well as several nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10am Wednesday in St. Paul’s R.C. Church, E. Union St., Burlington. Friends and relatives may call at the Page Funeral Home, 302 E. Union St., Burlington on Tuesday from 7-9pm and again on Wednesday from 8:30-9:30am. Burial will follow Mass in Laurel Hill Cemetery, Burlington. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Samaritan Hospice, 5 Eves Drive, Suite 300, Marlton, NJ 08053 would be appreciated by his family.

Anthony Verrecchio of Lakeland Florida is at peace with the Lord. He joined his maker Friday May 2, 2008 after a brief battle with cancer. “Andy”, a longtime resident of Burlington County was an auto mechanic with Barlow Chevrolet until his retirement. Born in Philadelphia November 8, 1929, Andy and his bride moved to Burlington County shortly after their marriage. He will be greatly missed for his unique dancing skills, his willingness to assist family and friends in their time of need, his fondness for the Wildwoods where he met his wife and mostly for his love of dogs.
He was predeceased by his parents, Anthony and Martha Verrecchio of Willingboro, NJ as well as infant grandsons Matthew and Mark Gavio. He is survived by his wife of 58 years Claire (nee Lawler) of Lakeland, FL, his daughter Joyce Gavio (Mike Tomlinson) of Burlington, NJ and his son Gary (Teresa) Verrecchio of Lakeland, FL. He will be missed by his two grandchildren, Michael (Shelly) Gavio of Mullica Hill, NJ and Jill (Brian) Stillwagon of Mt. Laurel, NJ and his five great grandchildren Michael, Brian, Lily, Jenna and Grace. Andy will be missed by his brother Vincent (Irene) Verrecchio of Villas, NJ. His faithful companion “Mr. B” will also especially miss Andy.
Friends and relatives may call at the Page Funeral Home, 302 E. Union St., Burlington on Thursday May 8th from 7-9pm and again on Friday from 8:30-9:15am. Mass of Christian Burial will held in Corpus Christi Church, Sunset Rd. Willingboro on Friday May 9th at 10:00am. Interment will follow mass in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Rt. 130, Burlington.

Jean E. Lukens (nee Mancini), of Burlington Township, died Thursday, May 1, 2008. surrounded by her family at Lourdes Hospital, Willingboro, at the age of 77. Mrs. Lukens was born in Burlington and remained a lifelong resident. She was a lifelong member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, in Burlington. She enjoyed taking that “ride” to her favorite casino, Harrah’s, in Atlantic City, to play the slot machines, trips to Long Beach Island, and cooking delicious meals for her family, especially during the holidays. But most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her loving family and watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren growing up to be the fine adults they are today.
Daughter of the late Martin and Leah Rodman Mancini, she is survived by her husband of 56 years, Edward J. Lukens, her six daughters and her sons in law, Maryellen and Theresa, of Burlington, Jacqueline and Tom Smith, of Phillipsburg, Cindy and Leon Battaglia, of Burlington Township, Susan and Mike Coin, of Burlington Township, Joanne and Joe Hejda, of Hamilton Township, her fifteen grandchildren, Joe Eisele and wife, Colleen, of Burlington Township, Jamie Schools and husband, Wade, of Clayton, Jonathan and Lindsay Hejda, Carlee Eisele, Eddie, Leon, Bryan and Eric Battaglia, Jennifer, Stephanie and Shannon Smith, and Amy and Steven Coin, her two great grandchildren, Dominic Eisele and Andrew Schools and several nieces and nephews.
Sister of the late John Mancini and Kenneth Mancini, she is also survived by her two sisters in law, Louise Mancini and Edith Mancini.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM on Monday in St. Paul’s Catholic Church, E. Union St., Burlington, with burial following in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
Friends may also call at the Page Funeral Home, 302 E. Union St., Burlington, on Sunday from 6 to 8 PM and on Monday from 8:30 to 9:30 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations made in her memory to St. Paul’s Church Renovation Fund, 223 E. Union St., Burlington, 08016, would be appreciated by her family.
