Walter Doherty Obituary

Fishing is not an escape from life but often a deeper immersion into it. There's a fine line between fishing or just standing on the shore and many men spend their lives fishing, without knowing that it is not the fish they are after. Fishing teaches patience, friendship and humility. Be shore of yourself and sea life's beauty. Walter W. "Bill" Doherty was strong willed with a short temper who found patience, friendship and humility in fishing, faith and family. Bill held his faith dear and on Wednesday August 16, 2017 the tide had slipped away from the surf and the "big one" got away from all of us. Mr. Doherty was born in Bristol, PA and had been a longtime Burlington resident. Bill graduated from high school as an auto mechanic and had volunteered as a firefighter at the Florence Twp. Fire Department, station 2. During his early years he worked for Griffin Pipe before making his career as a Maintenance Mechanic at Stepan Co. in Fieldsboro. Bill had contributed to manpower of our great nation and upheld the ideals of our American freedoms serving in the United States Air Force. He was a biker and the pipes had to be loud! Bill was a member of H.O.G. and was an avid Eagles and Flyers fan. Good things come to those who bait and Bill was certain that a bad day of fishing was better than any day at work. He fished from the surf at Island Beach State Park in Seaside with beach pass #32 and was a member of the Berkley Striper Club. He fished the entire month of november and spent many days standing on the surf fishing with his best friend Fred Bogue. Bill was a family man who will be fondly remembered for his unconditional love. Mr. Doherty is survived by his wife Frances (nee Merlino) Doherty and is the father of Janice, Sean, Emily and the late Stephanie Doherty. He is the proud grandfather of Stephanie and Dylan Hamelink and is the son of William & Margaret (nee Crawford) Doherty. He is also survived and will be sadly missed by his sisters Cherylann Doherty-Fosdick & her husband Ken and Karen & her husband Jim McGrath. Bill is also survived and will be sadly missed by his nieces & nephews as well as the cats (that we knew he loved and pretended not to.) Relatives and friends are invited to join the Doherty family to remember Bill, pay tribute to the "big one" and celebrate the memory of a dedicated husband, father, son and friend on Tuesday evening between 7:00 pm and 9:00 pm and on Wednesday morning between 8:30 am and 9:30 am at the Page Funeral Home 302 E. Union St. Burlington. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday morning at 10:00 am at All Saints Church 502 High St. Burlington. Inurnment will immediately follow at Laurel Hill Cemetery, Burlington. To share a loving memory, please visit www.pagefuneralhome.com To send flowers or a memorial gift to the family of Walter W.
