Arleen A. Bishop (Nee: Whelan) of Beverly NJ, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend, passed away after battling some recent health problems at Pennsylvania Hospital on Wednesday June 12, 2024, at the age of 85.
She was born and raised in Burlington, NJ. on November 22, 1938, to the late James and Sarah Whelan (Nee: Bolger). Arleen recently lost her beloved husband and best friend Raymond Dean Bishop, Sr. on January 30, 2024. They were married for 65 amazing years. She leaves to cherish her memory to their four children: Raymond Bishop, Jr., Michael Bishop, John (Christine) Bishop and Krisanne (Paul) Newman, grandchildren; Katherine (Matt) Gemino, Lauren (Tyler) Wagoner, Emily Bishop, Alyssa (Casey) de la Pena, Paul (Dawn) Newman, Carley Newman, Casey Newman, Heather McKee, and great-grandchildren; Grayson, Liam, Valerie, Everett and Brooke. Arleen is also survived by her brother William (Evelyn) Whelan, predeceased by siblings; Alice (James) Sampson, John (Roberta)Whelan, James (Phyllis) Whelan, Jr., Joseph Whelan, Mary (Donald) McCloskey, Kathleen (Charles) Bowker and many nieces and nephews.
Arleen was an active member of St. Joseph’s RC Church (Jesus the Good Shepherd Parish). She was a certified religious education teacher for 43 years and was awarded “Teacher of the Year” in 2002 by the Knights of Columbus. She loved teaching the Bible to her students. She was a member of Saint Joseph’s PTA, a spiritual member of the Altar Rosary Society, a former member of The Body of Christ prayer community, a former member of The Divine Mercy prayer group at Mother Katharine Drexel Parish (St Paul's). Besides being a homemaker, she was employed by NJ Bell Telephone and various other clerical positions throughout her life.
Arleen and Ray had a precious bond and did many things together including taking trips to Cape May and Atlantic City, boating on the Delaware River, where she grew up, and going on vacations with her family. She threw the best 4th of July picnics and made the best barbecue chicken, and who could ever forget her famous iced tea. Arleen was the best cook and homemaker a family could ever want. She loved gardening, growing flowers and vegetables in her yard, baking, raising her children, going to church, having tea parties with her grandchildren and making Irish soda bread with them.
Arleen dedicated her life to God and her family. She is now with God and reunited in Eternity with her beloved Ray and family members who have gone before them. Her dedication and love will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
The family invites friends to her viewing and funeral mass. Her viewing will be held at Page Funeral Home, 302 E. Union Street, Burlington on Friday, June 21, 2024, from 6-8pm and Saturday from 8:45-9:45am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30am in Jesus the Good Shepherd Parish (St. Joe’s), Warren Street, Beverly NJ with burial to follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery on Jacksonville Road. Burlington NJ.
