Jo-Ann Xenakis of Burlington, NJ passed away on Tuesday, October 29 at the age of 95, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Romanou, Lemnos Greece and first came to this country with her family in 1956. She worked at various jobs in New York, along with her mother, sewing in a garment factory and boxing candy at Barricini Chocolates. After a visit to Greece in 1960 she met and married Stratis Xenakis, her husband of 50 years. They started their family in Jamaica, New York, later moving to Burlington, New Jersey to purchase Stewart’s Drive-In where they enjoyed working together and raising their three children. Jo-Ann was devoted to her family and when she wasn’t cooking for everyone or making her infamous koulouria cookies, she and Stratis enjoyed taking rides to Columbus market, going to Atlantic City, and having breakfast at the Golden Dawn Diner. They were inseparable and did everything together. Her greatest love was her family and her faith, and nothing brought a bigger smile to her face than spending time with her grandchildren. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed. Her love, kindness and beautiful spirit will live in our hearts forever.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Xenophon and Parthenopie Constantinou, her husband Stratis, her brother Theodore and her grand-daughter Tula. She is survived by her loving children, Lefkothea (Taso), their son Harry, Parthenopie-Maria, Kirk (Yvette), their children Gianna, Anthea, Strati, and Lucas. She is also survived by her brother George (Tasoula), her loving nieces Maro and Pam, her God-daughter Konstantina, and their families, as well as many other friends and relatives here and in Greece.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, Nov. 5th 9:00am-10:30am at St. Thomas Greek Orthodox Church, Cherry Hill, NJ with services to follow.
