Joseph Appleton Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Joseph F. Appleton, known lovingly as Joe, on March 2, 2025. Born in Mt. Holly, NJ, on May 9, 1954, and raised in Burlington, NJ, Joe lived a life full of resilience, love, and devotion to family.

Joe was the beloved husband of Mary J. Appleton, his one true love and life partner for over 50 years. Together, they built more than just a home—they created a life filled with laughter, adventure, and deep-rooted love in Elbert, CO, where they resided for more than two decades. Whether hiking the trails, riding his tractor, or spending time at Cripple Creek Casino, Joe found joy in the simple yet profound moments of life.

Joe had a passion for the open road and was never happier than when he was riding his Harley Davidson, feeling the wind on his face and the freedom of the journey ahead. His bike wasn’t just a machine—it was an extension of his spirit, a symbol of his independence, strength, and love for adventure.

A jack of all trades, Joe was a man of strength and determination. He took immense pride in his work and in the family he built. Beneath his tough exterior was a man of unwavering love, fierce loyalty, and quiet kindness—a husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend whose impact was felt deeply by those fortunate enough to truly know him.

The last six months without his beloved Mary were the hardest of Joe’s life. His heart never stopped longing for her, and now, we find solace in knowing they are together again, reunited in eternal love.

Joe is survived by his loving daughter Heather (Bernard) and his cherished grandchildren Janáe, Treshaun, Trent Jr., and Tremaine. His great grandchildren Preston, Tremaine James, and Aubrie. He also leaves behind his siblings David Appleton (Miriam), Gina Appleton, Paula Janson, and James Jr. (Jimbo), along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will miss him dearly.

He now rests in peace alongside his beloved Mary, as well as his mom, Alice Mary Appleton, siblings Ronald Appleton (Ronnie), Steven Appleton (Stevie), and Alice Mary Janson, who welcomed him home with open arms.

Joe’s legacy of service, love, and perseverance will live on in all those who knew him. A retired member of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Joe took great pride in his work and in his time serving his country, including his honorable service in the Vietnam War. Though our hearts ache with his absence, we take comfort in knowing he is at peace, watching over us with Mary by his side.

A celebration of Joe’s life will be held at Page Funeral Home, 302 E. Union St., Burlington Monday March 10th from 8:30-10:30am, where family and friends can gather to share memories and honor the man who meant so much to so many. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11am Monday in St. Paul R.C. Church, 223 E. Union St., Burlington. Interment will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery Mausoleum Wednesday, March 12th at 10:30am. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions made to either St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital or the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s would be appreciated by his family.

Ride free, Joe. Your road continues beyond the horizon, and your heart is whole again
