Margaret Mary McElwee (Smith) passed peacefully into Heaven on Friday, February 3, 2023 in her home of 57 years in Burlington Township surrounded by love, hymns and prayers. She was 100 years old.
Born September 2, 1922, she grew up in a loving home in Collingdale PA with her parents, Charles and Margaret Smith, her sister Regina and her aunts Rose (Foe) and Mary (Mae). A devoted Roman Catholic, she attended Catholic grammar and high school and then entered a nursing program at Misericordia Hospital and became a Registered Nurse. She married her husband of 44+ years, Hugh J. McElwee and had four children. The family settled in Burlington Township in 1965. She was an active member of St. Paul P.T.A. She also worked as a nurse at Memorial Hospital (Virtua) in Mt. Holly and Masonic Home in Burlington. She retired from nursing in August, 1984. In her later life she enjoyed participating in the Corpus Christi Seniors group, playing pinochle with her friends and most of all babysitting her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She was a woman of faith who was a constant source of love, kindness, patience and peace. She was always there to help family, friends, and neighbors in any way she could. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Margaret was predeceased by her loving husband Hugh, and their son John, and her sister Regina MacKay. Her memory will be cherished by daughters; Jeanne Marie McElwee, Patricia Dasher-Williams; son Joseph (Shelley) McElwee; grandchildren Matthew (Catie), Andrew (Stephanie), Elizabeth (Tony), Lisa and John; great-grandchildren: Addison, Kieran, Kyleigh, Julianna, Ivyanne, Joseph, Valentina and Sofia; daughter-in-law Wanda; many close nieces and nephews, her dear friends Josephine and Doris and many friends and neighbors. A viewing will be held at Page Funeral Home, 302 E. Union St. Burlington on Thursday from 9-10:30am. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at All Saints RC Church, 502 High Street, Burlington at 11am with burial to follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery.
