Myrtle Winifred Speller, daughter of Azariah and Verdene Brown and widow of Dr. George W.
Hill and Abram L.Speller, was born on March 26, 1936, in Miami, Florida.
She began her education in Ossining, New York, graduating from the Junior Senior High School
in 1954. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Morgan State University
in 1958.
Following employment as a chemist with the Presbyterian hospital of the City of New York and
the V.A. Hospital in Montrose, New York, she worked in research and development for Kraft
Food in Tarrytown, New York. After moving to Willingboro, New Jersey in 1987, she became the
Assistant Quality Control Manager for Venice Maids Food in Vineland, New Jersey. In 2002, she
retired as Coordinator of Volunteers for Buttonwood Hospital of Burlington County.
Myrtle was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Alpha Gamma chapter in 1956.
Formerly a member of the Westchester (NY) Alumnae Chapter, she was an active member of
the Rancocas Valley Alumnae chapter, Willingboro, NJ. She also served on the Board of
Directors for the Volunteer Center of Burlington County. She loved doing crossword and jigsaw
puzzles, reading, playing cards and board games, watching TV game shows and reality shows,
and writing poetry. Myrtle loved and had a unique relationship with her family. She was a
devoted daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and aunt. She was thrilled to
be called “Auntie Mert” by many.
Myrtle was predeceased by her parents, Verdene and AC Brown and sisters Benita Thompson
and Grace Howard. She is survived by two children, Devorah and Neal Hill; grandchildren
Andaye Espinoza, Giovanna de Freitas Silveira, Andrew and Valerie Hill, and
great-granddaughter Amaya Espinoza; sister Ceola Loan; daughter-in-law Ana Carla de Freitas
Hill; nieces Kimberly Thompson, Dena Neverdon, Paris Parker-Loan, Marissa Neverdon, Valeria
Galloway, Joyce Sterling Howard, and Lisa Parker-Loan; nephews Willie Parker-Loan, Mason
Parker-Loan, Elliott Howard and Garry Neverdon; brothers-in-law William Thompson, Peter
Loan and Jimmie Lee Howard; former daughter-in-law Rev. Valencia Norman; and godson Alex
Smith. Myrtle also leaves adopted family members: sisters Norma Johnson and Isabelle Addis;
niece Karyn Williams; nephews Charles Williams and Steven Johnson; daughter Doreen
Stevens, and goddaughter Monica Smith. In addition, Myrtle leaves numerous cousins and
friends.
