It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Nicholas J. Abate on Wednesday, February 18th at the Veteran’s Hospital in Lebanon, PA. Nick passed almost 10 years to the day that he lost his wife Ellie. We find comfort in knowing they, along with other family members, are reunited.
Nick was the beloved son of the late Joseph and Edith Abate; the loving husband of the late Eleanor Abate; and was predeceased by his sister, Joan Campolungo, and his Godfather, Gus Donniacuo. He is survived by his devoted brother, Joseph Abate, and sister-in-law, Loretta Abate; Nephews Ronald Campolungo and Joseph N. Abate; Nieces Gina Abate and Lisa Sivon (John); and Great-Nephews and Niece, Joseph L. Abate, Jude Abate, and Genevieve Sivon, whom he lovingly called his “Angel.” He is also survived by his children, Michelle and Nicky; grandchildren, Abby, Nicholas and Heather; along with many cousins from both the Jacoby and Vizachero families.
Nick was born June 3, 1942 and graduated from Burlington City High School in 1960. He grew up in the family restaurant, Gus’ Pizza which is now known as Villa Rosa. After high school Nick worked alongside his father at the Modern American Barber Shop on Broad Street, where he built lifelong friendships within the community.
Nick honorably served in the United States Army during the Vietnam Era as a Military Police Officer, spending two years stationed in Panama. After returning home, he continued his commitment to public service as a Volunteer for the Burlington Endeavor Squad and as a Burlington City Police Officer. He served with distinction for 10 years as a K-9 Officer alongside his beloved German Shepherd, Zeus. During his time serving, he received several awards for exceptional marksmanship and helping to establish the department’s K-9 Unit. Although his law enforcement career was cut short due to an injury sustained in the line of duty, his dedication to protecting others never faded, and he remained a proud supporter of veterans throughout his life.
While stationed in Panama, Nick developed a deep love for animals while surrounded by exotic wildlife. He cared for many unique pets during his time there and even managed to bring a few back home. Due to his rare ability to understand them, train them, and earn their trust, Nick’s bond with animals stayed with him throughout his life. Whether it was his K-9 partner Zeus, his parrot who greeted his guests, or his cat whom he proudly taught tricks, animals were naturally drawn to him, and he to them.
Nick and Ellie began a new chapter when they moved to the shore. For several years, they owned a successful restaurant in Surf City on LBI, called “Fish & Things” which is now known as The Greenhouse Café. Nick also built several townhouses on LBI and owned the historic McCrory’s on High Street in Burlington. Eventually they settled in Manahawkin, where they loved hosting family and friends, especially during the summer months. Since his brother Joe’s shore house was nearby, this made it possible for generations of family members to frequently gather there. Whether out on the boat, watching the Super Bowl, or enjoying the buffet, countless memories and cherished bonds were made.
Nick was known for his magnetic personality and could always be counted on to have a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye as he eagerly shared his newest joke or magic trick. This earned him the proud title of “Magician”, as his great niece would happily tell anyone who would listen.
Nick will be remembered as a beautiful man, inside and out. He lived fully, loved deeply and his loyalty was unwavering. Although our hearts are heavy, we remind ourselves how fortunate we were to have something so beautiful that makes saying goodbye so difficult. Nick’s steady presence will be deeply missed by his brother Joe as his absence leaves a space that can never be filled. While death leaves a heartache no one can heal, our love leaves memories no one can steal. Until we meet again…
