In Loving Memory of Norman Gibson
It is with deep sorrow and sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Norman Linton Gibson, born on December 15th, 1980, in New Jersey. Norman, affectingly known as “Bambi” departed this life on February 24, 2025, at the age of 44.
Norman was the cherished fifth child in his family. He was diagnosed with severe autism, bipolar disorder, intellectual disability and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), causing his mother, Shirley Gibson to place him in a New Jersey, group home in 1982. It, broke Norman’s Grandmother, Emily Gibson’s heart that she was not able to care for him as she did for her other grandchildren.
Norman attended the Woods School and lived in several foster group homes before moving to Fox Chase group home at Durand on October 1, 1991. He attended several other Day Programs before permanently attending Durand ATS in July of 2002. In 2025, Norman was diagnosed with obesity and Type II Diabetes.
Norman thrived under the care of the Fox Chase group home, as the second longest resident. Notwithstanding his intellectual disabilities, he was able to recognize and form bonds with each resident, staff and visitors. He was able to care for himself, his bedroom, and regularly clean up after himself, with reminder or assistance as needed. He was the first resident diagnosed with COVID-19 and despite his illness and the long shut-in, Norman remained kind and loving.
Norman loved sitting outdoors during the warm weather, taking in the sun and fresh air, while reading the coupon section of newspapers. He loved eating and expressed his love to anyone willing to give him food.
Norman loved each visit with his grandmother, Emily Gibson and other family members. During visits with his family, Norman love to eat fried chicken, and to be tickled, often saying “tickle, tickle, tickle”. Norman had an infectious smile that brightened the day of all who met him. He loved watching the Sponge Bob tv show and he loved the Sponge Bob character, most. He even had a collection of all the Sponge Bob videos.
Norman loved and mastered puzzles and was able to finish a puzzle, even after he peeled off the pictures on some puzzle pieces. He loved helping, was respectful, attentive, kind, and a great listener. After requesting something like water or a snack from the staff, he would say “please”.
Norman did not like to exercise, often saying “no” refusing to get on the treadmill as directed. He loved walking outdoors at a fast pace ahead of everyone, so that he could have a moment of rest on the ground, while awaiting everyone else to catch up. He would often be found asleep on the floor even though he had a very comfortable bed.
Norman was predeceased by his beloved mother, Shirley Gibson; his grandmother, Emily Gibson; and his aunt, Emily Millington. He is survived by his father: Willie Lett, his siblings: Wanda Williams (Jermaine), Jimmy Gibson, Willie Gibson, Willice Gibson, and Tiffany Gibson; his aunts, Rebecca Bell, Lorna Gibson and Allesia Gibson; his many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The family of Norman Linton Gibson, would like to take this opportunity to express their sincere thanks to Durand Inc., and the entire Fox Chase staff: Christopher Tabor, Raeshana Lee, Klajah Socree, Alfred Ayi-bamah, Mamie Seima-kawa, Jordyn Barnes, Christopher Kitchen, Alpha Siaka, Aunye Israel, Karolyne Rosario, and Vivien Obiagwu. You are amazing, we have not worried once about our Norman in your care. We know you did everything in your power to keep him safe, making him feel loved, and treating him like you would treat one of your own family members. Your tireless care and your endless compassion made all the difference in Norman’s life. You also made a huge difference in our lives as the family of one of your residents. Knowing that you were all there – giving your best to Norman every day when we could not be there– took an enormous worry off our minds. We so appreciate that the staff did an excellent job of keeping our family aware of any concerns. Our hearts are filled with gratitude for you all. God bless you all!
Norman will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His memory will live on, in the hearts of his family, the Durand staff, the Fox chase staff and his friends.
Rest in peace. We love you, Norman.
