Peter A. Altavilla, Jr. of Burlington Township passed away Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at Cooper Hospital in Camden, at the age of 66. Peter, or Pete, was born in Levittown, PA and became a long-time resident of Burlington, both in childhood and then again with his family later in life.
Peter served his country honorably for twenty-one years in the United States Army, commissioned in 1983 and retiring in 2004 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He continued to serve his country as a civilian, working as an executive level program manager in the defense industry. First at Alion Science and Technology, which then became Huntington Ingalls Industries.
Pete involved himself with many activities, people, groups, communities, and organizations, and often put as much of himself as he could into them. He was very involved in the Alpha Pi Lambda Fraternity at Drexel University, and served as its Alumni Vice President for many years. He joined the Boy Scouts of America when his son did, and served as Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster, and other roles with BSA Troop 32 of Mt. Holly. Pete stayed very close with many friends from childhood and with many from his service in the Army. He was instrumental in the founding of the Drexel Alumni Veterans Network. Pete was also a member of the South Jersey Celtic Society, and thoroughly enjoyed its events. In all of these communities, and more, Pete enjoyed the brotherhood and camaraderie that each group brought and that he was privileged to share.
In his spare time, Pete enjoyed traveling, reading, and collecting models and other memorabilia. He loved history, especially the revolutionary era and military history broadly. He enjoyed the outdoors, and had a great fondness for specific places and activities that were special to him and his family. These include Down East Maine, Island Beach State Park, Army-Navy football games, Stewart’s Root Beer in Burlington, and many more.
He was predeceased by his parents, Peter A. and Ann Marie (nee Liott) Altavilla, Sr. He is survived by his wife Barbara (Babs), (nee Dubov), and his son and daughter in law; Peter Anthony and Jennifer Pearlman Altavilla, III, and many other extended family members.
