Robert Schmidt Obituary

Robert J. Schmidt, of Edgewater Park, died on December 2, 2023 after a brief illness at the age of 88. Born in Philadelphia in April 1935, “Bob” was the second son of the late Lawrence J. and Irene A. (neé Bott) Schmidt. A 1953 graduate of Northeast Catholic High School, he earned an associate degree in electrical engineering from Penn State (Abington). He served two years in the Naval Reserves. While working at Lit Brothers Department Store, he met the love of his life, Susan, whom he married in 1961. Together they had four children. Over his long and varied career, he was employed by RCA, Prudential Insurance, Philco-Ford, National Lock Fasteners, Lucas Schaevitz, and Mars Electronics, primarily in sales or purchasing. He last worked for Ritz Camera before retiring. Bob and Sue were active members of the Riverside and Willingboro Jaycees, where they developed lasting friendships. Bob achieved status as a Distinguished Senator in addition to holding office in the respective local organizations. A devoted Philadelphia sports fan, he enjoyed rooting for the Phillies, Eagles, Flyers, and Union as well as the Nittany Lions of his alma mater. Most of all, he loved cheering on his children and grandchildren in their respective athletic endeavors – soccer, field hockey, football, field hockey, and softball. When not watching sports, Bob enjoyed bowling and golf. In years past, he had been part of softball leagues as a player and coach. Bob was preceded in death by his parents and brother Laurence and lost his beloved Susan to cancer in 2014. He is survived by his brother, Raymond Schmidt, and sister, Joan Weber; his children Lawrence (Lynne) Schmidt, Donna (Thomas) Wajda, Anne (Mark) Siket, and Patricia “Trish” Schmidt; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. A requiem will be held on Friday, December 8, at noon at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Burlington, NJ. Family and friends may pay their respects at Old St. Mary’s Church on Thursday, December 7, from 6 to 8 pm or Friday between 9:30 and 11 am. Interment will be at Lakeview Memorial Park, Cinnaminson.
