Rose Althouse Obituary

Rose Marie Greco Althouse passed away peacefully on July 10,2018 at the age of 98 in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina after a long life full of love, family and friends. Rose was born August 18, 1920, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Vincent and Grace Greco. She was the oldest, and last surviving of four siblings - Atea Greco Youngblood, Gilda Greco Mattioli, and Vincent Greco. Rose graduated from Overbrook High School in Philadelphia. In 1945 she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Health Education from West Chester State Teachers College and in 1974 a Master of Arts Degree from Glassboro State Teachers College (now Rowan University) of New Jersey. In 1946, while teaching at Pleasantville High School in New Jersey, Rose met Herbert E. Althouse, a Commander in the United States Navy. Rose & Herb were married on December 29, 1948, at the Naval Air Station in Corpus Christi, Texas. Rose and Herb travelled extensively with the Navy, including assignments at Naval Air Stations in San Diego, Oakland/Alameda, Pensacola and Memphis. After their military adventures, they settled in Mt. Holly, New Jersey, home for most of their lives, and raised their three children- Calvin Vincent Althouse, Herbert Elgin Althouse, Jr. and Karen Lynne (Althouse) Lawrence. Rose loved teaching and dedicated most of her life to that endeavor. She taught Physical Education, Health, and Social Studies at Burlington City High School for 19 years. She enjoyed her experiences with her colleagues and the community. She often said her most cherished and rewarding memories were those of her relationships with her students and her opportunity to bring quality educational experiences to her community. She was greatly admired by her colleagues for her total commitment as a teacher Rose retired from teaching in 1981 but remained active. She was a member of the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia and the American Association of University Women. She enjoyed playing golf, traveling, and painting. All those who knew Rose will miss her tremendously. Her children could not have had a more caring, loving, smart, energetic and fun mother....and she was the best cook ever!! Rose is survived by her three children, daughter in law Diane Althouse, son in law William Lawrence Jr., grandchildren Sarah Lawrence and William Lawrence, III, and numerous nieces & nephews. Rose's remains will be interred next to those of Herbert E. Althouse, Sr., her husband of 58 years, at the Hillside Cemetery in Roslyn, Pennsylvania. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that friends & relatives make a contribution to the charity of their choice. We would like to thank the wonderful people of Brightwater Skilled Nursing Facility in Myrtle Beach, SC for their concern & caring during Rose's last few years.
