Walter William Tum Suden, Jr., 93 passed into glory on Friday, October 25, 2024, at Samaritan Hospice in Mt. Holly, NJ.
Walt was born at Bellevue Private Hospital in Camden, NJ on June 24, 1931, to Walter and Dorothy (Corn) Tum Suden, Sr. He graduated from Moorestown High School in 1950. After graduation, he did carpentry work with his Uncle Lawrence (Buzzy) Corn in the Moorestown, NJ area. He also volunteered with the Pennsauken (Merchantville) Fire Department.
Around this time, he became reacquainted with Marilyn Deininger through extended family and friends. Walt started working with at RCA (The Radio Corporation of America) in 1951 as an electrical tester and was inducted into the U.S. Army on April 1, 1952. He served in the 51st Signal Battalion in the Korean Conflict and rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant before returning to the United States. Walt received the Korean Service Medal with 3 bronze stars, the United Nations Service Medal, the Presidential Unit Citation, and the National Defense Service Medal. Marilyn waited for Walt to return home and wrote him frequent letters while he was stationed in Korea. Upon return home, he continued his military career in the Army National Guard for 8 years before an honorable discharge on May 13, 1960. After Walt’s discharge, he returned home to RCA/GE (General Electric) working on contracts for the Defense Department and the Apollos Space Programs’ communication equipment. He continued to work for GE until he retired in 1993.
During Walt’s lifetime, he enjoyed his CJ-2 Jeep Willy but gave it up when he started dating Marilyn. Walt and Marilyn were married October 8, 1955, at St. George’s Wesleyan Methodist Church in Camden. Walt and Marilyn later moved to Willingboro, NJ (known as Levittown at that time) and started a family. Two sons, Keith and Gary were born into the family in 1956 and 1964, respectively. Walt enjoyed gardening, birdwatching, and making wooden figurines, but his favorite hobby was building model railroad locomotives which numbered in the hundreds. Walt and Marilyn often took family trips to Lancaster, PA, and other steam train destinations.
Walt accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior as a child and was faithful to read his Bible with Marilyn and attend First Baptist Church of Willingboro since 1969. Walt devoted many hours to cutting the grass at First Baptist Church and considered it his service to the Lord. Walter is preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Marilyn, as well as his parents Walter and Dorothy Tum Suden, Sr. He is survived by his brother Jay Tum Suden of Lancaster County, PA, and sons Keith Tum Suden (Roberta) and Gary Tum Suden (Jane). Walt was blessed with 5 grandchildren: Kristine Nelson, Keith Tum Suden, Jr. (Kayla), Sarah Stringfellow (Brendan), Philip Tum Suden and Daniel Tum Suden. He leaves behind 9 loving grandchildren: Caleb, Isabella, Alexandria, Aubree, Gabriel, and Everly Tum Suden, as well as Brady and Aiden Nelson and Levi Stringfellow.
Friends and family are invited to gather for visitation on Wednesday, October 30, 2024, at 10 AM with the service to begin at 11 AM at First Baptist Church of Willingboro, 216 Sunset Road, Willingboro, NJ 08046. Interment will follow at Arlington Cemetery, 1620 Cove Road, Pennsauken, NJ. A Repast (luncheon) will follow the burial at First Baptist Church of Willingboro. All are welcome.
